Is Becoming a Certified Project Management Professional Worth It?
In the blog, Why Should I get a Certification in Project Management, I shared the benefits of obtaining a certification in the field of project management. Currently, the Project Management Institute (PMI) offers nine different certifications. Among these, I want to take a moment to dive deeper into the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification.
In 2010, I vividly remember debating whether I should pursue certification as a project manager. At the time, I was managing numerous ad-hoc projects in a government environment where the term "project manager" didn’t exist—only the action, "manage a project." I started taking online project management courses for my professional development and to learn tactics to help me stay afloat amidst my growing responsibilities.
It was then that I had a realization that changed everything: if I was going to manage projects, why wouldn’t I strive to be the best project manager I could be and implement a structured methodology? With that mindset, I dove right in, began documenting and tracking my experience and hours, earned professional development units (PDUs), and within six months, I was scheduled to take the PMP exam.
The timing of the exam was unforgettable—it was the weekend after my honeymoon! I still recall sitting on the plane with my newlywed husband, who graciously quizzed me on Earned Value Management (EVM) flashcards.
Fast forward 15 years as a certified Project Management Professional, and I can confidently say that earning this credential has been one of the best professional decisions I’ve ever made. Not only has it opened doors to tremendous work opportunities, but it has also given me the confidence to manage projects ranging from small and straightforward to the most complex and politically challenging initiatives—with poise and assurance.
If you’re contemplating whether to pursue the PMP certification, I’ve answered some of the most common questions to help you decide.
Is the PMP a Tough Exam?
Yes, the PMP exam is considered one of the most challenging project management exams due to its breadth and depth. However, if it were easy, everyone would do it! If you’re already managing complex projects, chances are you have the skills, experience, and determination to prepare for - and pass - the exam.
Can I Get a PMP Certification Without a Specific Degree?
Yes, a specific degree is not mandatory to obtain the PMP certification. PMI offers multiple eligibility paths based on your education and experience. For the most current details, I recommend visiting the PMI website, where eligibility requirements are outlined clearly.
How Much Does a PMP Certification Cost?
The cost of obtaining a PMP certification includes several components:
Preparation Materials: Costs vary and can range from free resources to paid courses or books.
Exam Fee: Currently $425 for PMI members and $675 for non-members.
Maintenance Costs: Maintaining the certification requires earning 60 PDUs every three years. These can be obtained through free webinars, attending seminars, or purchasing courses.
While the investment may seem significant, the PMP certification often leads to higher salaries and better career opportunities, making it a worthwhile expense.
Will My PMP Certification Expire?
Yes, the PMP certification requires renewal every three years. To maintain it, you must earn 60 PDUs during this period. PDUs can be earned through various activities, such as:
Attending webinars or conferences.
Completing project management courses.
Volunteering or contributing to the project management community.
This ensures that certified professionals remain up to date with industry trends and best practices.
Pursuing the PMP certification is a significant commitment, but the professional rewards are substantial. Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills, advance your career, or gain recognition as a leader in project management, the PMP can be a game-changer.
